Primary Particle Physics Workshop

Thirty local primary school pupils were recently introduced to the fascinating world of particle physics at a science masterclass hosted at our very own Phiz Lab.

Children in Years 5 and 6 from Mickleton, Welford upon Avon, Dormer House, St Catharine’s, St James and Ebrington, St David’s, Moreton and St Mary’s, Broadway spent the class learning about the subatomic particles that have been discovered by scientists working at the new Hadron Collider, in Cern, on the French-Swiss border.

Pupils were introduced to the subject with the help of the colourful Particle Zoo family of characters made up of quarks, leptons and other constituents. During the two hour session, each participant got to make their own model particle and present its key properties back to the class.

Greg Stotesbury, Head of Science at Dormer School said: “I was very impressed with the morning. The children were thoroughly engaged and fascinated by the world of particle physics.”

An enthusiastic Isobel Blair aged 11 from Dormer School said: “It was brilliant! I have learnt loads!”

The session was led by Dr Maria Pavlidou from the University of Birmingham’s School of Science and Astronomy and sponsored by The Ogden Trust.
