Ri Maths Masterclasses

Our Sixth Form Mathematicians have been doing a fantastic job with a new project run in partnership with The Royal Institution (Ri).

Earlier in the term, six Year 12 students were trained to run Primary Mathematics Masterclasses for KS2 primary school pupils local to Chipping Campden. This innovative programme aims to open young people's eyes to the excitement and real-world value of mathematics.

A six week course started on 4 November and involved 28 Year 5 and 6 pupils from St James & Ebrington, St Catharine's, St David's, Mickleton, Blockley and Welford-on-Avon Primary Schools. Each session was designed to stretch the most able young Mathematicians by giving them the opportunity to use existing skills in challenging and unfamiliar contexts through investigation and problem solving.

The feedback from primary teachers, pupils and parents has been really positive. Our Sixth Formers have also really enjoyed it and have learnt a lot from the process. Student, Henry Binfield said: " Teaching such bright and enthusiastic students has been a wonderful experience and allows one to envisage the busy, yet rewarding life of a teacher - planning lessons and coping with when students work at an impressive pace to finish all the work before the end! The experience has enabled me to develop skills which will helpful in the future."

Zoe Griffiths, Primary Mathematics Masterclasses Coordinator at the Ri added: "It has been exciting for us to be involved in the setup of the Masterclass series at Chipping Campden School. The project is hugely beneficial for both the primary school students and the sixth formers involved. We are keen to use this successful model in the future, working with secondary schools and their teachers to start Primary Mathematics Masterclass series in other areas of the country."

The Ri is an independent charity founded in 1799 whose purpose is to encourage people to think more deeply about the wonders and applications of science and maths. Well done to Jacob Greenslade, Jake Campbell, Eve Smith-Lomas Theo Ebbutt and James Peace for taking on the challenge of becoming a teacher!

The initiative also received funding from The Ogden Trust.
